My plan was to turn the "daggerboard" back into a centerboard on my Whip. I tried for a week with no luck on trying to find a local source to fashion a bronze centerboard pin. I finally had to order a $3.00 piece + $15.00 shipping and handling (ouch!). It's about a foot long piece of silicon bronze and I will cut the length I need using a dremel cutting disk. First off, I'm jealous. I was hoping to have my Whip in the water by now. However, this afternoon, I read through your previous thread on how you got to this point and you definitely deserve some water time. Congratulations! I definitely concur with your dislike of heat. That is why I'm reading through your posts instead of outside working on my Whip. I have to wear rubber gloves to mix aby cas - sailmfg
I think that I have discovered that my "center board" has been converted to a dagger board. See the picture of the pivot bolt. First, it is a bolt, not a pin. From looking at the retaining brackets installed on the boat, it appears a much smaller pin used to be fitted on the board. From what I can figure out from the newer bolt arrangement is that the entire assembly is now meant toby cas - sailmfg
Thanks for the update. Hopefully it will inspire me to do the same with my Whip. However, I need to wait for cooler weather and build a temporary shelter first since I don't have a garage or workshop. casby cas - sailmfg
That is exactly what I needed. Thanks. My boat does not have that wood piece (mast partner) at all. Without it, it is impossible for me to keep the mast stable long enough to secure it. I'll have to fabricate a replacement. Here are a few pics that I quickly took in the fading light, after work today. Use these as a starting point and let me know where to focus more attention for additionby cas - sailmfg

McGuire, your first three pictures of the boat shows what appears to be a wooden block, which I recently learned is called a mast partner, at deck level where the mast passed through. Another picture of a Whip shows something similar I don't have that with my boat. That might explain why it found it impossible to keep the mast upright long enough to secure it. Are the extra digits on the transom? My number is on the upper right corner of transom. There is not enough space to include more digits without line wrapping.by cas - sailmfg
From taking a rough measurement of my mast, I get about 2.5 inches by 3 inches and 26 feet and 7 inches length. Based on this, I would probably be looking at Dwyer mast DM-4 or DM-5. Note however, that the shape is not the same. The Whip mast is shaped more like DM-368 or 400. If building a complete new spar, shape probably isn't much of a factor. The only way I know of to get an accurate weby cas - sailmfg
Thanks for the boom pics. Well, yesterday, I tried several times to raise the mast on the boat. First I wanted to get a feel for how everything goes together in the safety of my back yard. Second, I wanted to take some close up pics of the mast hardware in action. After several bruises ending with a head thumping, I've come to the conclusion that some sort of mast tabernacle or hinge will havby cas - sailmfg
Thanks for the pictures. That helps me a lot. The boat is sitting on a trailer with bottom rollers. I didn't know if the centerboard would protrude from the hull when up and interfere with the rollers. Your pic suggests that the entire board is enclosed when up. That is good for trailer usage but not good for mast raising (which I will discuss in other thread).by cas - sailmfg
Mine was already out when I got it. I've got the opposite situation, how does it go back in? Here are some pics of it out. What does it look like in the boat? casby cas - sailmfg
First, a caveat. I bought this boat a couple months ago and it's been under cover ever since. I've been waiting until my evening classes were done before allowing myself permission to mess around with it. So I don't know a lot about it yet. You mentioned rigging details. Have you seen the rigging instructions at: I can take some more pictures of the mast if you need it. Here are some to gby cas - sailmfg
I have a 74 Whip with number MFGA0016M74G. This is a standard HIN that is described at this web site This decodes as Manufacturer: MFG Hull Serial Number: A0016 Year: 1974 Month: Feb The sail number is 33 which doesn't match the hull number of 16. I don't know if the numbers are supposed to match. I was assuming that the "A" might have identified the boat model. My huby cas - sailmfg
Can't help you, as I don't have a copperhead. I assume you've seen the rig details on this website? The sail area is listed as 85 square feet. A google search shows the sunfish as 75 square feet. So it might work for now. The sunfish hull is 130 lbs vice the copperhead at 135 lbs. So if you don't get any better information from a copperhead owner, then the sunfish dagger board dimensions miby cas - sailmfg
First item on my ToDo list for May is to reconfigure the trailer. The trailer is titled as 1966, so I know it isn't the original trailer for my 1974 Whip. The boat is resting on two rollers with two bunks on each side. The bunks are pretty far apart. I've looked at the posted document about proper MFG boats bunk placement. The current bunks are too far apart according to that document. My oby cas - sailmfg
Thanks for the response. The reacher has migrated down my ToDo list which grows daily. Unfortunately, the first item on my list is to keep the boat under wraps until May so that it doesn't distract me from my current after hours preoccupation which is finishing a class / term paper. I'll post my second item in my original thread (trailer related) to keep this thread reacher related. However,by cas - sailmfg
My Whip has main and jib but no reacher. Anyone know the design numbers for the reacher? Or can measure one? Thanks, Chrisby cas - sailmfg

arknoah is trading up in size. I have acquired his MFG Whip. I will be busy with school (adult education) until May, so it will be kept under wraps until Spring. Chrisby cas - sailmfg
