What year is my Sidewinder?

What year is my Sidewinder?

I have a Sidewinder with sail #916 and a second one with sail #1271. I'm not too sure about the second number since I'm recalling the numbers from memory. Is there another way to tell with a hull number for example?

Jason,

#916 is certainly a pretty low number, but I cannot see how it could be before 1971. The first year of sidewinders was 1969. I have a 1973 sidewinder and the sail # is 1181. I have a 1974 sidewinder as well but I don't know the sail number off hand. I know of two other sidewinders, one from 1970 and the sail number is 448 and one from 1977 and the sail number is 1827.

So, your first boat (#916) is probably from 1972. Your second one (#1271) is probably from 1973 or 1974. I wish I could find the sail of my 1974 to help narrow it down a bit more but I don't have it handy.

Most boats should have a boat identification number on the stern of the boat, akin to automobile VIN's. Good Old Boat magazine ran an article on this about three years ago. Part of the number is two digit year of manufacture and the month is indicated by a letter. Older boats may not have been required to have a number, but all new boats must have one.

don't know how much this helps but my sail number is #830 and its a '72 model. I don't know how many were made a year, a day, etc...
