I’m starting the process of repairing and restoring my sidewinder (serial #906) and I’ve never w
orked on a boat before so I’m looking for some help compiling resources for future restorers!

I intend to document and post photos of the process as much as possible.
There are a few shallow cracks in the hull and topside along with some more serious cracks on the deck by the centerboard. I need to replace the port holes, the auto bailer, repair the sidewalk and replace a few cleats/jams especially the toe hold ones, and probably repaint it.

I’m aware that epoxy and fiberglass are involved in the repair process but I’m not sure how exactly to start repairing the cracks/stripped cleat holes.
I would appreciate any resources that future restorers and I can use to learn!

Hi all,

Thanks for the add. I am a recreational daysailor/cruiser (and very occasional casual racer) -- mostly in Casco Bay and coastal Maine. I had a J-24 for many years (actually cruised with my young family in it), and now I own a Cape Dory 26. But last weekend --in a fit of COVID-closure desperation, I bought an early Sidewinder and trailer in sailable, but rough shape. Hull and deck look decent -- no soft spots or bog issues. All the parts are there -- though some are homemade and most others are badly worn, so it's going to need some work and a bunch of replacement stuff. I will be sailing this in Maryland/Viriginia bay/river/lakes mostly. Not sure how much time/effort I am going to spend restoring it or trying to make it look beautiful, but I want to make it a solid, fun, go-fast boat, so I'm looking for info on rigging options, repairs and parts / substitutes. Thats said, I am curious if anyone is actually doing significant restorations on these...

Regarding replacements, I have a few rough, home brew items I want to replace with either originals or decent substitutes. Specifically, someone fabricated both replacement centerboard and rudder/tiller out of heavy plate steel (with raised grips on one side!). While both of these work, the rudder is a real monstrosity, does not kick up, and weighs a ton). I am wondering if any replacements/substitutions are available? Note the hull attachment is original and solid, but the rest. Any advice on this would be much appreciated..

Also need to replace most of the jib setup -- one of the stays is fraying in the middle (I will make/have made these and may change the chainplate arrangement as well -- it seems super flimsy) and it looks like the furler blew up at some point (the guts are missing) so i need recommendations on an appropriate replacement (or used one). Twill also replace the rest of the running rigging as it is really old.

I guess that's it to start. am missing a few pieces of hardware. The self-bailer is gone-- sealed and roughly plated over. Not sure I care. The foredeck jam cleat (for the furler sheet I presume) is missing and the one on the centerboard casing is shattered. I notice that both these seem to be thru-bolted and, while I think I can get to the back of the deck cleat, the centerboard one is enclosed in the hull. Any advice on how to deal with this?

Anything major I shaped look for as Iget this stuff taken care of and get it in the water?

Thanks very much on advance for any help/info!

Sank my sidewinder! Help with righting a capsize? (6 replies)

Brought my sidewinder out for the second sail I’ve done with it and during the course of the sail I capsized (as you do) but instead of being able to grab onto the centerboard and right it, it just kept going down till it was sitting on the lakebed...
apparently both of the porthole covers came off when it capsized and the hull just completely filled with water. Two power boats pulled me to a boat lift and helped me bail it and towed me back to the launch.

Once it was off the lakebed I saw both of the porthole covers had gone missing and are now somewhere underwater. So now I guess I need to get new porthole covers at least, and likely just new portholes entirely.

My understanding is that the boat should be able to be capsized for a decent amount of time without actually sinking, right?

Anyone have experience righting capsized sidewinders?

Hello all, I recently bought a Sidewinder to get back into sailing after taking off several years. Does anyone have any guidance for the amount to tension on the sail from the downhall under different wind conditions? I am used to sailing catamarans so this is all a new experience. The boat did not come with a head sail nor any cleats that would hold the jib sheets. I would like to add a head sail and was wondering if anyone has just attached the sail directly to the forestay (suggestions needed) or if a furler is needed. If anyone has a spare I would be willing to take it off your hands :). I would also need to add some cam cleats for the jib sheet but I cannot find any dimensions for their placement or orientation.
Thanks,
Dillon

I have a 1977 Bandit 15. The boom is 2 1/2 inch round aluminium. The cast aluminium boom end fitting on the outboard end has disintegrated and I need a replacement so I can reattach the outhaul pulley. Looks like the end caps are actually the same on both ends.
Anyone know where I can find a replacement boom end fitting for 2 1/2 inch round tubing?

If I can't find a replacement, any good ideas for changing the rigging of the outhaul so it doesn't rely on a pulley attached to the defunct boom end fitting?

Greetings from upstate Ny, just wanted to share our story and meet other owners as well as gain knowledge from the community. My wife and I were given a neat sporty looking sailboat not long ago. (In my best pirate voice)~ Lo and behold she be a MFG-19 matey! Being born and raised in Miami I'm sure it's only obvious I have been around water and boats all my life. Of course my history is strictly motor boating and sailing was just too slow for me and never really sparked my interest. Until this small beauty was bestowed upon me on cold spring evening. "Lady Ivala." A very dirty neglected mfg 19 sitting nose up snug on her trailer, awaiting me rescue from sure demise. She was now ours..

After cleaning her up as best as I could it's time to get to work. I'm currently painting the interior roof as the headliner was on the floor and glue which hung like old cob webs quivering in the subtle breeze. I am only done with two coats of primer and what a difference already. I plan on flat whiting the interior roof for this summer so we can enjoy her until winter when I will replace with ivory carpeting. All of the padded wood bench cover will be redone in stained mahogany and my wife will stitch all new cushioning. The sails themselves seem to be in pretty good shape except for the genoa. I have heard of the place in pa that refurbishes them for a decent price. I will be utilizing their service very soon. As for now I have to finish painting. Refinish interior wood, tiller/rudder. Install fuse box for lighting and radios. Replace cockpit drain tubes. Build a companionway hatch. And track down papers for her. Any advice on that would help. Looking forward to meeting you all and learning how to sail.... Eric and Ivala.

I've just bought an MFG 19 (1979) and I'm looking forward to refitting and sailing it. My friends at Joe Wheeler marina on Wheeler Lake, Alabama, own a very nice S2 which I'm privvy to hitch with when I can so I'm no stranger to wind power, but I'm still a novice owner. I've been a diehard powerboater most all my life but its time to settle down a bit. I've learned a bit here in the background and would like to learn more from you MFG owners, especially regarding sprucing up the soon to be named bank account drainer lol. Hope to meet you sailing!!! Best Regards, Chris

I was searching the net and I found a listing for a copperhead for sale that was the original owner of the boat with this centerboard... I called to see if he still has it and he doesn't. He doesn't know the measurements but promised to call me back if he can find out.. If not I have a picture that I can scale off of or if someone else has done that before by all means. The ad does say 31" depth so I am unsure if that is the draft board down or if that is the actual length of the board
Here it is

Hi All,

First of all, this forum is a wealth of info and is much appreciated! Thank you all!

Alright, so I bought my Sidewinder last April. This is my first boat (other than kayaks/canoes) and my first sailboat. After a quick lesson on rigging it up by the previous owner and a few sailing videos on youtube, I hit the water. This boat is fast, responsive and a blast to sail!

With that being said, the previous owner had painted the deck and cockpit with what looks like the "battleship gray" deck paint by Rustoleum. It looks like it was either rolled on or brushed (more likely brushed due to all the brush strokes), and I don't think he cared to do any prep work whatsoever. All of the hardware, the rubrails, even the two scuppers were painted over! Needless to say, she's a little bit ugly.

Does anyone have any experience painting the deck? I want to restore her to the beautiful blue that is peaking through all of the cracked battleship gray paint! Also, any advice on repainting the bottom? Since I keep her on the trailer, can I use the rustoleum glossy white topside paint from Lowes after a good sanding and priming?

Thank you in advance!
