Hi Paul:
Thanks for the info. Seems like a tether for the centerboard will do the trick.
I did see the post about the gasket - thanks, very helpful.
Also saw the info on the bailer - thanks.
Thanks about the portholes - will replace.
I appreciate your getting back to me.

Hi Marcus,

I have not seen requests for parts other than centerboards and rudders. If a sidewinder turtles, the centerboard falls out the top of the slot and sinks the the bottom of the lake. I'm not sure the price someone would be willing to pay for those parts. There really is not much of a market.

It sounds like you have the hard to find parts. There are some posts in the forums here about how to replace the centerboard gaskets. The bailer is a holt-allen bailer and I believe can still be purchased new. You won't find the old coffee can lid type of pot hole covers anywhere. The portholes would have to be replaced with new portholes. This is not a hard job. The jib furler might be more difficult to find.

Just bought an old Sidewinder and am trying to decide whether to sell off parts or fix it up (no garage, not many tools). Hull seems to be watertight and pretty good for its age.
It has original aluminum rudder & centerboard, mainsail (good condition w/ a few small spots), 2-piece mast, self-bailer (2 pieces- lower piece keeps falling out).
Needs: main-sheet (& blocks/cams), rigging (3 stays & quick release/adjust hardware), mast cap, halyard block, 2 port covers, centerboard tether, jib (and furler or other hardware to use jib), cleats/cams, tiller extension, etc.

Is there a market for the original parts? What do they go for?
Is this boat worth putting together?

Any advice will be deeply appreciated including how/where to find/create the missing parts!
Thank you!

Thanks Joe,
I don't know if my self bailer is original equipment or not, but my plan is to replace it since I can't get it to stop leaking. I was looking at getting a self bailier that looks just like the one you installed. Now I just have to get the time to do it. I found a compression plug that works for the small hole in the front wall. The plug you show looks to be back by the rudder and I found a standard boat drain plug that screws in for that spot and works nicely. On another topic, that was a great video of you sailing your sidewinder. I have been out twice so far in mine and was terrified of tipping over each time...in very light winds. The slightest change in wind direction or boat direction seems to want to capsize me. I think it might be time to take some local lessons.
I got it at Walmart and yes the hole is required. This is the only way you can drain the front section, especially since you have the new and improved non-floor like myself.
After sailing for about 1 hour or so, I had about 1 1/2" to 2" of water around the self bailer. I never got going fast enough to allow the self bailer to suck out the water. Winds were very light and that was just fine for me since it was the first time I have ever been sailing. I was very nervous the entire time about getting knocked over but I enjoyed it none the less. Hopefully I can do it again next weekend. As to your offer of help, if you are amenable, I may bring my boat around some time to show you how the main sheet is rigged. Pictures might work too. The hardware that came with the sailboat is not original equipment and I think I have the main sheet rigged correctly, but it would be nice to have someone with experience to tell me if it looks right to them.

I have another question on the small hole that occurs at the front wall where your feet go. THis is up near my self bailer. I imagine that it allos the water to drain out from between the hull if water gets in there while sailing. It also seems like water could get in that way if it is not pluggged so I think I am missing a plug. Does anyone have a picture of their plug that they could send me so that I can look for something appropriate for my sidewinder? Sorry about the bad pircture quality. It is a little too close. The hole is mostly covered by my blue masking tape in the image below.

Greetings to all. I purchased a Sidewinder last fall and spent some of the warmer winter days getting it and it's trailer in shape to register and put on the water. I know nothing about sailing and hope to use this sleek little craft to learn. My questions concern the self bailer. I have never had the sailboat in the water and would like to know the following:
1. Should water come in when the boat is not moving and the bailer is closed? If so, about how deep will it get around your feet?
2. Based upon how the hull is built/designed, is there any possibility of water getting between the floor and bottom of the hull or are these one and the same thing?
3. I don't seem able to force the bailer pull (black plastic in the attached photo) all of the way up so that it will torate to the left in the slot in it's sleeve. It makes it most of the way...just another 16th of an inch would do it but I don't want to pull so hard that I break the bailer. Is this a concern? It stays up fairly well once pulled up.

I have to apologize about the photo. I have never posted to a forum before and I can't figure out how it's done. I tried simply pasting the image within the text frame but that didn't work. Can someone please explain how it is done? I ran a search on how to include a photo in this forum and it came up empty.
Thank you,

Definition: Gunkholing is a boating and sea kayaking term referring to a type of cruising in shallow or shoal water, meandering from place to place, spending the nights in coves. The term refers to the gunk, or mud, typical of the creeks, coves, marshes, sloughs, and rivers that are referred to as gunkholes. While not necessary, gunkholers typically seek out the serenity of isolated anchorages over the crowds of marinas and popular bays, and a minimal draft is preferred, since gunkholers tend to go as far up and into the gunkholes as possible, seeking ever more inaccessible destinations.

Thanks Dale. This happens to be my listing. Sadly, I didn't have much time to sail my MFG19 last year and I don't think this year will be much better so I am selling. The Craigslist ad has details. I also listed it on sailboat listings.com. If there is a different place I should list it, let me know.

Thanks,

Hi,
I have a 1979 MFG19 that I need to sell. I have sailed it at Rocky Fork Lake the last 2 years and it is a great sailboat. All sails (jib and main), rigging, and hull in great shape. In fact, everything is ready to sail. I am selling it because I don't get the time to go out on it much and I would like to see it go to someone who will be able to use it more. Comes with a 5 HP Tohatsu motor and EZ loader trailer. Asking price is $2500.

If you know of anyone who might be interested, I would suggest they contact me by phone. # is 513-325-0162. My name is Mike. I can send pictures or you can look at it on sailboatlistings.com

Thanks!

My daughter did some more searching on the internet and found the Boston Yacht Sail Co. It’s now called Doyle Boston Sailmakers out of Sarnia Ontario Canada.

We only made a small amount of sails with Boston and Irish went some where else for his sails. It’s been so long ago I don’t think Boston would have any information on the Challenger sails.

I was a personal friend of Leon Irish, the time was late 1950’s. I was in the U.S. Coast Guard during Koran War, when I got home I started building the Challenger 15 and Mr. Irish was building the Snipe. I asked Leon how he got in to building boats ! he said I built a wood Snipe for myself and a friend like the boat, asked if he wouldn’t build one for him, so! he built another one and it seemed to go from there. Leon was working at the Ford Motor Car Co. at the time and he finely was able to make a living building boats. He quite Fords and made boats full time. If you read my first blog you will see I sold the rights to the Challenger 15 to Leon and that was about 1960 or 1961. It took several years for the Challenger 15 to really get going, but he was finely able to build more Challenger 15 than Snips.
